In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Tollywood's renowned art director Rajiv Nair reflects on the unexpected passing of Bollywood's celebrated art director
Nitin Chandrakant Desai, who tragically took his own life by hanging in Karjat, Maharashtra on August 2, 2023. Desai, aged 57 at the time of his demise, left behind a legacy that has significantly impacted the Indian film industry.
Rajiv, have you ever had the opportunity to meet Nitin Desai in person? No, unfortunately I never had the chance to meet him in person.
But his work has always been an inspiration to me. Back when we began our careers, he was already an accomplished art director. During that time, the term "production designer" hadn't yet gained popularity; he was known as an art director. I still remember his outstanding work in movies like '1942: A Love Story' which caught my attention. He garnered a lot of praise and even won the National Award four times. His creativity and talent were truly exceptional.
Desai's work indeed left a mark on the industry. Can you recall any specific instances where his influence was evident?Absolutely, his influence was undeniable. His art direction in movies by directors like
Sanjay Leela Bhansali showcased his ability to transform the screen with his artistic vision. He contributed immensely to the Mumbai film industry and the Indian film fraternity as a whole. He was a legendary figure who played a vital role in shaping the visual aesthetics of Indian cinema.
There have been reports suggesting financial troubles as a possible reason behind his demise. What are your thoughts on this?I've heard rumors about him facing financial challenges, particularly related to the studio he owned in the outskirts of Mumbai. Reports indicated significant debts. However, I can't confirm the details as I wasn't involved in the intricacies. It's difficult to believe that someone of his caliber and creativity would succumb to such circumstances. He was a visionary, and his contributions to the industry were invaluable.
Can you share a personal example of how Nitin Desai's work impacted you?Certainly, his art direction in '1942: A Love Story' left a lasting impression on me. The visuals and the way he integrated the set design with the storytelling were remarkable. It's a film that stands as an example to his incredible talent and vision. He created a unique visual language that resonated with audiences and filmmakers alike.
The loss of Nitin Desai is a great blow to the Indian film industry. His contributions as a pioneering art director and production designer will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers. As Rajiv Nair rightly pointed out, his work was a visual language that conveyed emotions and stories in a way that was truly exceptional. While the reasons behind his passing remain shrouded in mystery, his legacy remains an enduring tribute to his artistic brilliance.
